Sports in Olympics Games

The Olympic Games or Olympiad are the greatest international sports events that are held every four years. It is the greatest event because more than two hundred nations participate in it with athletes from around the world. A variety of competitions are organized in the event.

The games are divided into Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics that are held every four years but two years apart. They include around 33 different sports and 400 events. The Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics have different sports.

The Summer Olympics include archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, diving, equestrian, field hockey, fencing, football, gymnastics, golf, handball, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, rugby sevens, sailing, shooting, surfing, swimming, synchronized swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, water polo, weight lifting, wrestling etc.

The Winter Olympics were started due to the success of the Summer Olympics.

The Winter Olympics include alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, luge, Nordic combined, short track speed skating, skeleton, ski jumping, snowboarding, speed skating etc.

Badminton- There are two opponents in this sport who compete by bouncing the shuttle by using the badminton racket. If the opponent fails to bounce back the shuttle, the other one earns a point.

Basketball- There are two teams of 5 players in a rectangular court. The teams have to put the ball in the basket for earning points. They can use their arm and leg force for this purpose.

Field hockey- The two teams have to put the ball in the goal post by using a hockey stick.

Table tennis and tennis- There are 2 individuals or two teams of 2 players each who have to bounce the tennis ball over the net that is in between. The game is played in a rectangular court or in doors.

Volleyball- There are two teams of 6 players each. The teams have to bounce the ball over the net and into the opponent’s court. They earn points if the other team fails to bounce the ball and it touches the ground.

Ice hockey– The game is played on ice rather than a field. The players are on skates and they use their sticks to put a rubber puck into the opponent’s net to score points. The game has two teams of 6 players each including a goal tender.

Snowboarding– The sport is done on a snow covered slope. The player has to descend the slope while standing on a snowboard which is attached to the rider’s feet. The sport is inspired by other sports like skateboarding, surfing and skiing.

Ski jumping- It is a very difficult sport because the participants have to achieve the longest jump after descending from a specially designed ramp on their skis. The more the jump length is the more is the score.
